2 Costes Chairs – Designed by Philippe Starck for Driade

Set of two Costes chairs, designed in 1984 by Philippe Starck for Driade. The Costes is one of the French designer's most famous projects and represents one of the icons of Italian postmodern design of the 1980s. With its essential and immediately recognizable silhouette, the chair combines formal rigor, comfort, and a strong sculptural personality.

Design and history

Created to furnish the Café Costes in Paris, the chair takes its name from the famous establishment for which it was designed. The characteristic curved plywood shell encloses the backrest and seat, while the black tubular steel structure forms three inclined legs that give lightness and dynamism to the whole.

The contrast between the warm wood surface and the essential metal structure perfectly expresses Starck's research, capable of transforming simple elements into objects with a strongly iconic identity. Over the years, the Costes has become one of the symbols of the collaboration between Philippe Starck and Driade and a reference in international contemporary design.

Condition

The lot, consisting of two original Driade chairs, is in good overall used condition, with slight and natural signs of age consistent with the age and history of the pieces. The metal structure is solid and stable, while the wooden shells retain their integrity and characteristic original appearance.
